Kanye West has been making his rounds in the headlines since announcing his bid for the presidency on July 4. Many people at the time thought the rapper was merely pulling a publicity stunt.

However, West has continued along this path, hosting his first official campaign rally in South Carolina on Sunday. At the rally he spoke about he and wife Kim Kardashian’s decision not to abort their oldest child North West, and claimed Harriet Tubman had never actually freed slaves.

The rally left some concerned for West, who was emotional to the point of tears and singled out members in the audience for wearing mask.

A day later in a series of now deleted tweets, West accused both his wife and and his mother-in-law Kris Jenner of trying to have him “locked up.”

The 43-year-old compared his life to Jordan Peele’s 2017 film ‘Get Out’ and seemed to address his wife’s past, saying he puts his life on his God that “Norths mom would never photograph her doing playboy” (Kim has posed nude for the outlet in the past.)

While some people said the rapper sent the tweets for clout and to promote his upcoming album DONDA, titled after his late mother, the recent rant sparked conversations of mental health in the Black community and how it is not taken seriously.

Twitter user @qssley said the Black community constantly dismisses mental heath. Another Twitter user, @infallibelle, said bipolar disorder isn’t a joke and is something people struggle with daily.

#KanyeWest is definitely going through something mentally. the black community dismisses mental health constantly. this isn’t funny. he shows signs of being bipolar and having psychological issues. this isn’t some big joke this is his mental health showing it’s true skin pic.twitter.com/i5XefEqHB0

who is allowing kanye west to speak publicly while experiencing extreme mental breakdowns? why are we making jokes about a man with severe mental health issues instead of asking why the world is being allowed to watch them take place?

Twitter user @devitoandcrew_ said it broke her heart to see West’s tweets.

My heart actually broke seeing #KanyeWest This man needs help yet ppl out here mocking/ making fun of him are the same ones crying “we need more mental health services” and “normalize mental health issues” or “ break the stigma” or “be kind”. & we wonder why ppl don’t seek help!

In an episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman last year, Kanye spoke openly about his personal struggles with mental health.

“It is a health issue that has a strong stigma on it, and people are allowed to say anything about it and discriminate in any way,” said West. “This is like a sprained brain, like having a sprained ankle. If someone has a sprained ankle, you’re not going to push on him more.”

At the time, West said when you’re in that state, you’re hyper-paranoid about everything.

“This is my experience,” he said. “Everyone now is an actor. Everything is a conspiracy. You see everything. You feel the government is putting chips in your head. You feel you’re being recorded, you feel all these things.”

During the interview with David Letterman, West said if you don’t take your medication daily to keep you at a certain state when you’re bipolar, you have the potential to ramp up and it can take you to a point where you can even end up in the hospital.

“You start acting erratic, as TMZ would put it.”
